How to Read LIM in Calculus
- 1). Write "lim(x --> a) f(x)," remembering to write the expression "(x --> a)" without parentheses under "lim." Read what you have written by saying "the limit of F of X as X approaches A."
- 2). Write "lim(x --> a-) f(x)," remembering to write the expression "(x --> a-)" without parentheses under "lim" and remembering also to write the minus sign after the a as a superscript. Read what you have written by saying "the limit of F of X as X approaches A from the left."
- 3). Write "lim(x --> a+) f(x)," remembering to write the expression "(x --> a+)" without parentheses under "lim" and remembering also to write the plus sign after the a as a superscript. Read what you have written by saying "the limit of F of X as X approaches A from the right."
- 4). Write "lim(x --> a) f(x)," remembering to write the expression "(x -->a)" without parentheses under "lim." Read what you have written by saying "the limit of F of X as X approaches A from the right."
