How to Remove the Transmission From My 1973 Dodge Charger
- 1). Lift the car with a floor jack. Place a mechanical jack stand under a suitable lift point along the Charger's chassis and lower the floor jack until the Charger rests on it. Repeat this process three more times to place the entire car on jack stands.
- 2). Place the transmission jack underneath the transmission and raise the collector so that it is cradling the transmission.
- 3). Disconnect the throttle valve cable, the speedometer cable and the shifter linkage. For the 727 transmission, you may have to remove the dipstick filler tube as well, in order to gain clearance for removal.
- 4). Disconnect the tail housing from the driveshaft at the U-joint. Remove the drive shaft from the U-joint at the rear differential as well, to prevent inadvertent damage to the driveshaft while the transmission is out of the Charger.
- 5). Unbolt the transmission at the bellhousing if it is a manual transmission. Unbolt the transmission and bellhousing from the flywheel assembly if it is an automatic.
- 6). Lower the transmission with the transmission jack, and wheel it away from the Charger. Place the transmission onto a suitable workbench.
