    Locate the Thermostat

    • The location of your oven's thermostat will depend on the model. Check your owner's manual to find out if the controls are in the back of the oven or if they are front-mounted. For controls in the back, remove the screws that keep the back panel in place. Once the screws are removed, you should be able to lift off the panel.

On ovens with front-mounted controls, remove the screws that keep the front panel in place. Once they are removed, you should be able to pull out the control panel. The panel will still be wired, so be careful not to pull too far or too fast.

Before removing either panel, cut power by unplugging the oven.

    Check the Thermostat

    • Once you have located the thermostat, you will notice that it is wired to a number of terminals. This is when you will use the multimeter. Remove one wire at a time from the thermostat and connect your multimeter to it to test for continuity. Check each thermostat switch and replace the wires as you go. If you find that there is a lack of continuity on one of the switches, the thermostat may need to be replaced.

    Replacement

    • If you are not comfortable replacing the thermostat, call a professional to double-check the problem and install the new piece.

To replace the thermostat on your own, you first need to disconnect the capillary tube. It is located inside the oven and senses temperature changes. Once the tube is disconnected from its supports, carefully slide it through the back of the oven.

You will then remove the screws that hold the thermostat to the control panel. Once you have purchased a new thermostat, screw it back on to the control panel and connect the wires. The owner's manual should contain a diagram that will show you how the wires are connected back to the thermostat. Reinstall the capillary tube and secure it to the inside of the oven. Put the control panel back in place and test the new thermostat.
