    • 1). Remove the aquarium lid and pour in enough shredded newspaper to fill one quarter of the aquarium.

    • 2). Fill your aquarium halfway with a layer of soil or peat moss. Mix the newspaper and the soil together.

    • 3). Pour one or two liters of water into the mixture. The soil should be moist and damp, not soggy and buried underwater.

    • 4). Add your worms. You can purchase worms from a bait and tackle dealer, a local fishing shop or from an earthworm grower. North Carolina State University recommends adding 1,000 worms. However, if you are new to raising worms, it is acceptable to start with only a bait cup or two and increase the size of your worm operation as you learn.

    • 5). Put your leftover kitchen scraps into the aquarium. Worms will eat just about anything that is grown from the ground, including apple cores and fruit peels, leftover coffee grounds and tea leaves. Do not feed your worms meat or dairy products.

    • 6). Place the lid tightly over the aquarium to prevent the worms from escaping.
