How to Make Crappie Jigs With Simple Colors
- 1). Place a lead head jig in the jaws of a fly tying vise. The jig should be held in place by the bend of the hook with the point and barb on the bottom.
- 2). Place fly tying or cotton sewing thread in a fly tying bobbin. Make several turns of the thread around the neck of the jig. The neck is the formed jig section between the head and the bait holding point. Wrapping thread along this length will serve as a base for attaching feathers or animal hairs.
- 3). Select a clump of animal hairs or Malibu feathers in simple natural colors including black, brown, white and dark green. Place the feathers or fur around the shank of the hook. The end of the hairs or feathers should be flush against the base of the lead head.
- 4). Wrap the thread around the fur or feathers several times to initially hold them in place. Continue wrapping along the neck to form a body for the jig.
- 5). Form two over hand knots with the thread to tie off the wrapping. Clip the thread with a sharp pair of scissors. Apply a coating of clear nail polish to the thread wraps to seal them in place.
