How to Catch a Red Salmon
- 1). Tie a Coho or Russian River fly onto the end of your monofilament fishing line with a Uni knot. Attach a crimp-on lead weight 10 inches up the line from the fly.
- 2). Stand facing across a river that contains red salmon. Turn so you are facing slightly upstream at about a 45-degree angle.
- 3). Cast the fly across and slightly upstream. Reel in the slack in the line as the fly washes downstream.
- 4). Point your rod tip slightly upstream as you retrieve the fly across the stream back toward you.
- 5). Set the hook when you feel a bump or hard tap on the line. Raise the rod tip and reel down on the line to set the hook. Keep the line tight, because red salmon often put on an aerial show in an attempt to throw the hook.
