How to Troubleshoot a Headlight Adjustment
- 1). Move the car into a garage where the floor is level. Place the vehicle at least eight to 10 feet from a wall. If the garage does not provide this much space, park the vehicle in front of the garage door.
- 2). Open the hood of the vehicle.
- 3). Turn on the headlights and observe where the beams are pointing on the wall. If one beam is lower or higher than the other, it is out of alignment.
- 4). Measure up from the floor with the tape measure. Make a mark where the beam is the brightest on the wall for each light. Make another mark on the wall where the adjusted light beam should be hitting.
- 5). Locate the adjustment screw for the headlight. The screw is typically adjacent to the headlight and will require a nut driver or a Phillips head screwdriver.
- 6). Turn the screw clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the headlight. Check the location of the beam on the wall and stop turning when the headlights are aligned.
