Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers
When you're the greatest rock and roll band in the world, there will always be challengers, so it becomes necessary to step forward occasionally to remind the world how you earned that title - and to take steps in order to keep it. In 2014, Supersuckers are doing just that with their latest release Get The Hell.
But even as the band is preparing to defend their title, frontman Eddie Spaghetti is proving that he still has time to spread his expertise, by helping produce the newest album by one of Detroit's up-and-coming rock and roll greats - The Beggars.
We caught up with him while he was in town working in the studio.
RC: First of all, what brings you to Detroit?
ES: Well, I'm here to help the Beggars make a kick ass record.
RC: And how'd you get hooked up with them?
ES: Through my friend Tony Maisano, He's a local guy, we call him "Detroit Tony". He sort of represents all that's killer about Detroit, and he got me involved in the project, and I came down here last month for a few days and I got involved in the project and wanted to come back and see the completion of it.
RC: And the Supersuckers have some Detroit ties, too. I know you guys were pretty regular at the Magic Bag for a while, you recorded an album there.
ES: Yeah, we've always liked Detroit. It's a lovely little shithole that represents the Supersuckers completely and thoroughly.
RC: That's why I love it. I moved to Europe for two years and came right back home again. So you have a new record that drops on Tuesday, Get The Hell. I guess first of all, when you're already the greatest rock and roll band in the world, how do you take it to the next level with a new record?
ES: Well, that's a good question, because that was exactly the challenge - how do we top what we've already done? Why bother trying because, let's face it, the world needs another song like it needs another asshole. All the good songs have pretty much already been written, so why even bother trying?
The answer to that is, well, because you have to. If you want to remain the greatest rock and roll band in the world, you have to continuously prove it.
I think that we're still hungry; we haven't had any sort of really huge success, so we still feel like that's possible. There may be a bit of disillusion here, but we really think there's still a chance for the whole world to find out how awesome we are, so that's what motivates us.
RC: And you guys are truly the greatest rock and roll band in the world, but as an anecdote, I saw you guys open up for the New York Dolls years ago, and one thing that amazed me when you guys came out, because you were opening for the Dolls, you didn't mention that you were the greatest rock and roll band in the world. You just gave them their due that night.
ES: Right. There's a time and a place to drive that point home.
RC: And what was it like working with Blag Dahlia in the studio?
ES: It was great. He's a super cool dude, and he has great ideas. He's got a great ear; he always has. We've been friends for well over 20 years now, so it was nice to work with somebody you actually already like.
RC. And is there anything you want to say about the record for anyone going in, spinning it for the first time?
ES: If you think you like rock and roll, you might want to check out this record, because it's a rock and roll record for sure. Rock and roll for people who like rock and roll - and it's really kind of unapologetically rocking.
I think if anybody thinks they're gonna be a fan of rock music these days, they need to like this record.
Get The Hell will be released January 13, 2014. Read the review here.
