How to Change 1966 Mustang Shock Tower Caps
- 1). Open the hood and locate the shock towers on each side of the engine bay approximately midway between the firewall and the radiator support.
- 2). Remove the two bolts that hold the top of the shock absorber to the shock tower cap by backing them out with a 9/16-inch wrench turned in a counterclockwise direction. Place the bolts aside.
- 3). Pull up on the top of the shock absorber by hand and turn it counterclockwise 90 degrees so that the shock tower cap can be more easily removed.
- 4). Remove the three nuts that hold the shock tower cap in place with a 9/16-inch socket attached to a ratchet. Turn the ratchet in a counterclockwise direction and place the nuts aside. Lift the shock tower cap from the shock tower.
- 5). Place the new shock tower cap into position on top of the shock tower, lining up the mounting holes in the cap to the threaded studs protruding from the top of the shock tower.
- 6). Thread the nuts onto the studs to secure the shock tower cap. Tighten the nuts with a 9/16-inch socket and ratchet in a clockwise direction.
- 7). Rotate the top of the shock absorber so that its mounting slots line up with the threaded holes on the top of the shock tower cap. Thread the two shock absorber mounting bolts into the holes and tighten with a 9/16-inch wrench in a clockwise direction. Repeat all steps to replace the shock tower cap on the other side of the engine bay.
