    Size

    • Larger species of fish have higher levels of mercury because they live longer and have more time to accumulate it in their systems.

    Safety

    • For most people, consuming fish is not a safety concern. The nutritional benefits of fish outweigh any risk.

    Pregnancy, Young Children and Mercury

    • Pregnant women need to be especially cautious with how much fish they consume. It is recommended those in the high-risk category avoid fish with the highest levels of mercury and only consume up to 12 oz. of low-mercury fish per week.

    Women Planning to Become Pregnant

    • If you are planning to become pregnant, you should be aware of the amount of fish you consume. Mercury accumulates in your bloodstream and can take at least a year to be flushed from your system.

    Controversy

    • A study by the National Institutes of Health that found children whose mothers consumed more than the recommended 12 oz. of fish during pregnancy were stronger developmentally than children whose mothers stayed within the recommended guidelines.
