    Definitions

    • According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), leaves from "the Camellia sinensis plant are steamed to produce green tea." Yohimbe bark extract is drawn from "an active chemical found in the bark of the west African Pausinystalia yohimbe tree."

    Uses of Green Tea Extract

    • The NCCAM reports that green tea extract is used in capsule form as a weight loss and nutrition aid, and is added to many skincare products.

A University of Arizona study found that participants who took a caffeine-free green tea extract capsule everyday "had an increased production of detoxification enzymes, which may provide some cancer-fighting benefits."

    Uses of Yohimbe Bark Extract

    • Yohimbe bark extract is used with varying levels of success primarily to treat sexual dysfunction, along with nervous system dysfunction and dry mouth.

    Side Effects: Green Tea Extract

    • While NCCAM says that consuming green tea extract is safe, there have been reported cases of liver problems. To avoid irritation, take the extract with food.

    Side Effects: Yohimbe Bark Extract

    • Yohimbe bark extract may impact heart rate and blood pressure, causing anxiety or insomnia. The NCCAM states that "yohimbe can be dangerous if taken in large doses or for long periods of time."

As with many natural medicines, green tea and yohimbe bark extracts are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Effectiveness and side effects may vary. Consult a physician before incorporating them into your life.
