How to Loosen Your Vocal Cords Before Singing

    • 1). Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated. Room-temperature water or soothing, caffeine-free herbal teas are best. Do not drink anything cold because that causes your vocal cords and throat muscles to contract. Also, avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks and coffee.

    • 2). Spray your throat with a moisturizing spray before singing. Dryness tenses the vocal cords, but moisturizing them with a spray causes them to relax. Several varieties of throat sprays are available, and they are excellent for combating dryness from environmental factors. Choose the spray with advice from your voice teacher and get approval from your physician.

    • 3). Practice taking deep breaths, holding them and expelling them slowly using your diaphragm. Your stomach should expand during this breathing exercise and you should be using your abdominal muscles to control the air. When you breathe deeply, it prevents you from tensing your vocal cords by using muscles in your neck or upper body to control the airflow.

    • 4). Perform activities that promote relaxation of your whole body. If you feel tense or stressed, this tension will also affect your vocal cords. Try different relaxation exercises to relieve stress. For example, try focusing on different muscles, tensing them, and then forcing them to relax. This is especially helpful for relaxing the jaw and neck muscles. You could also get a massage to alleviate muscular tightness.

    • 5). Exercise the vocal cords with warm-up singing. You could hum five-note scales, and then move on to singing them. Your voice should ascend and then descend in pitch, but keep it in a comfortable range. Lip trills are also an excellent warm up technique. Simply hold your fingers on each side of your face and push in gently until your lips slightly purse out, and then start humming the scales. Your lips should be relaxed and vibrate together as you control the airflow, making a sound that many compare to a “bubble.”
