How to Sprout and Care for an Apple Seed
- 1). Moisten peat moss so that it is barely wet. Place the peat moss inside an airtight container. Place the container in a refrigerator for two months. This process is called cold stratification.
- 2). Fill a 6- to 8-inch planting pot three-quarters of the way full with peat moss. Lay the apple seed on the soil's surface and cover it with 1 inch of peat moss. Moisten the peat moss so it is damp and place the pot in a warm location.
- 3). Water the seed once per week with just enough water for the peat moss to remain damp. Watch for germination three to four weeks after planting.
- 4). Continue watering the apple seedling on a regular basis. Apple trees require a decent amount of water, but they do not grow well in standing water. Watering once per week to keep the soil damp is best.
- 5). Fertilize the seedling three times per year with a nitrogen-based fertilizer. Read the manufacturer's directions to determine how much fertilizer to use. Once the seedling is 2 years old, decrease fertilization to once per year.
- 6). Plant the apple tree in your yard when it is between 1 and 2 years old. Choose a location where the soil drains quickly. Do not fertilize at the same time as planting, since this causes root burn.
