How to Get Rid of Algae Blooms in Aquariums
- 1). Dip the fish net into the water and scoop out as many algae blooms as possible. Some of the blooms may be stuck to the walls of the aquarium, so it's important to dislodge them with the edge of the net before removing them from the water.
- 2). Collect the algae blooms in a bucket and discard.
- 3). Remove about 20 percent of the water from the tank using a bucket. Discard the water.
- 4). Fill the bucket with an equal amount of fresh water.
- 5). Add several drops of a dechlorination solution to the water inside the bucket. This will remove harmful chlorine and other elements from the water, making it safe to add to the tank.
- 6). Slowly pour the fresh water into the tank. Take care not to pour so fast that the water disturbs the gravel or other substrate at the bottom of the tank.
- 7). Allow the tank to reacclimate for one day.
- 8). Remove another 20 percent of the tank's water using a bucket, and discard the water.
- 9). Replace the water with fresh water that has been dechlorinated.

Repeat every day until the algae is removed from the tank and the water appears clear.
