How to Learn Hook Macrame
- 1). Assemble the tools that you need to begin learning macrame. You will need mounting cords, rings to hold the mounting cords, macrame board or project board, pins, such as T-pins, scissors, a measuring tape, cording, an embroidery needle and a crochet hook. You can also add various sizes and styles beads to projects if you choose. These products can be found at arts and craft stores.
- 2). Secure the ends of the cording to your board with pins near the top of the board in a straight horizontal line. This will keep your cords untangled when working. Different projects will use a different number of cords, depending on the complexity of the pattern. Begin with two cords for the learning process. Cords are made out of nylon, cotton, hemp, jute and a variety of other materials. They come in many colors so choose a color palette that you enjoy.
- 3). Practice the basic macrame knots so that you understand what they are before choosing a pattern and beginning a project. Begin with a square knot, which is a main knot used in many projects. Place the left cord over the center and under the right cord. Move the right cord under the center and through the hole over the left cord.
