How to Replace an Oil Pump in a Pontiac Grand Prix

    Remove the Oil Pump

    • 1). Drain the engine oil on your Pontiac Grand Prix. Drive your vehicle up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels so they don't roll. In addition, set the emergency break firmly into position so the car doesn't roll.

    • 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable and take out the oil pan. Remove the bolt that attaches the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap.

    • 3). Remove the oil pump itself, along with the driveshaft.

    Install the New Oil Pump

    • 1). Connect the new oil pump and driveshaft on your Pontiac Grand Prix. Torque the bolt to 30 ft-lb. Put the oil pan back in.

    • 2). Reconnect the negative battery cable. Put fresh, synthetic oil into the engine.

    • 3). Start the engine and check the area you worked on for any leaks. If there are no leaks, take the vehicle off the lifts.
