What Is a Fast-Action Spinning Rod?
- A spinning rod is a type of fishing rod that does not have a trigger hanging below the handle. They also have rod guides that get progressively larger between the rod tip and the reel. Spinning rods are available in a wide variety of strengths and sizes, so anglers can use them to catch nearly any size of fish that swims.
- The majority of the length of a fast-action spinning rod is rather stiff, but the rod begins to bend about three-quarters of the way up the rod from the handle. So, the top one-fourth of the rod bends when under pressure.
- Because fast-action spinning rods have sufficient backbone for a solid hook-set, as well as a lot of sensitivity thanks to the flexible tip, they are good choices for fishing single-hook lures, such as lead-head jigs. These lures require a sensitive rod so that fishermen can determine when a fish is biting. The bite may feel like a sharp "tap tap tap," although in many cases it simply feels like extra weight on the line. Anglers using less sensitive rods may not feel such bites.
- Fishermen primarily target midsized fish species with fast-action spinning rods. Some examples include largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleyes.
