How to Build a Simple Camping Chair
- 1). Draw the outline of the necessary wood shapes onto the hardwood. You will need 2 seat legs, 11 back slats, 7 seat slats, 2 back legs, 1 seat spreader, 2 seat supports, and 1 back spreader. The dimensions for these should be: Seat legs: 33 3/4-inches by 4 1/2 feet by 3/4-inches, back slats and seat slats: 19-inches by 1 1/2-inches x 3/8-inches, back legs: 37 3/4-inches by 6-inches by 3/4-inches, seat spreader: 13-inches by 1 1/2-inches by 3/4-inches, seat supports: 18-inches by 1 1/2-inches by 3/4-inches, back spreader: 15-inches by 1 1/2 inches by 3/4-inches.
- 2). Cut the wood shapes from the wood using the electric saw. The legs of the camping chair should curve in the middle looking somewhat like a bow. This is so that it is sturdier, and folds up better. Once the wood has been cut, sand the edges so that there are no rough edges or sides.
- 3). Lay out the chair slats on each side of the chair. The seat legs are attached to the back and seat slats. The two back legs are attached to the back slats with nails. Place them evenly apart, until the wood starts curving. The back legs should point back and the front legs should point outward in the opposite direction.
- 4). Slide the two pieces of chair together making sure the chair will stand when opened. Use the seat supports to hold the legs together. Nail or screw into place. This will enable the chair to open and close.
- 5). Nail the seat supporters to the bottom of the seat slats. This is to keep the strain of a person's body weight distributed throughout the chair, rather than just on the seat slats. Attach the seat spreaders to the top of the back and to the bottom of the legs. This will help keep the chair stable when in use.
- 6). Apply a wood sealant to the entire chair when finished. Use a paintbrush or foam brush to evenly apply the sealant. Make sure to reach all corners and crannies of the chair to completely weather proof it. Alternatively you can paint the chair with an outdoor paint. Use two coats for best protection.
