    Removal

    • 1). Locate the interior panel door and pry it open with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the fuel pump relay with your hand, just like a socket. Start the engine and let the car idle until the lack of fuel causes the engine to halt.

    • 2). Open the hood and let the engine cool before continuing with the maintenance. Unscrew the bolt that holds the cable to the negative terminal of the battery and remove to prevent current flow. Move this cable far away from the battery and any other metal surface.

    • 3). Place a drain pan below the radiator and remove the radiator filler cap. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the radiator, and let all of the engine coolant drain into the container. Replace the drain plug when finished.

    • 4). Label all of the electrical wiring, hoses and cables that connect to the intake manifold, throttle body and intake tube. The spark plug wires can be accessed when you remove the distributor cap. Unscrew the electrical wiring harness from the back of the alternator and disconnect the intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the air flow sensor and set aside.

    • 5). Unscrew the bolts of the upper intake manifold and remove from the engine. Set this part aside for later use after installation. Pry the intake manifold gasket off the engine with a flat-head screwdriver if necessary. Otherwise, this part should remove easily once the intake manifold has been taken away.

    • 6). Plug the cylinder head ports with clean rags to protect during the cleaning process. Scrape away all grime to create a clean surface for the new gasket installation. Use a gasket removal solvent if needed.

    Installation

    • 1). Coat both sides of the new manifold gasket with a sealant, then position it so that the holes align with the engine block ports perfectly.

    • 2). Position the new intake manifold so that it fits exactly as the previous one was installed. Torque each of the bolts to 12 foot-pounds, then 22 foot-pounds and finally to 30 foot-pounds of pressure to secure.

    • 3). Reinstall all of the electrical wiring, hoses and parts that were removed for this procedure.

    • 4). Pour the engine coolant back into the radiator. Replace the filler cap when you are finished.

    • 5). Refasten the screw to hold the cable to the negative battery terminal. Replace the fuel pump relay into the panel by hand.
