Weed Clearing Tools
- If you are reclaiming a section of overgrown land the brush hog is a good option. It is a machine that is similar to a lawnmower but the cutting blades are horizontal and across the front of the machine. They resemble large hedge trimmers and cut through thick brush. It is gasoline-powered and can be rented at any home store.
- On occasion you will only have to remove a small weeded area. The standing hand sickle is a good tool for this. It is swung in a back-and-forth motion in front of the user. It works well on thinner stalked plants.
- Occasionally a weed will grow into a think clump. These cannot be removed with the hand sickle or the brush hog. This will require digging the plant up with a shovel. The advantage to digging the plant up is the removal of the root structure. This will reduce the potential of the weed growing back.
- New home construction is often done in fields that were previously overgrown by weeds or reclaimed farmland. On this occasion you will have to till the entire yard with a power tiller. This project is a little extreme but it cuts the roots into small sections that will limit the potential for the weeds to grow back. The advantage is that the soil can be leveled with the back of a garden rake for the installation of sod or grass seed.
