How to Check the Oil on a 1981 Chevrolet Impala V6 Engine
- 1). Let your Impala sit for at least 10 minutes. Oil checks are more accurate when the engine has cooled.
- 2). Pop the hood of the car.
- 3). Locate the oil dipstick. It's got a big looped handle, usually yellow.
- 4). Remove the dipstick and wipe off the end with a clean rag.
- 5). Reinsert the dipstick into the pipe and draw it out again.
- 6). Check the two lines on the end of the dipstick. The oil level should register between the two lines. If the oil is close to or below the bottom line, you will need to add oil soon.
- 7). Look at and smell the oil on the dipstick. The oil should be clear and free of any particles. If you notice particles, grim or a gas smell, you should change the oil in the Impala as soon as possible.
