Step-by-Step Instructions for Wiring a Phone Jack
- 1). Label the six terminals with a a small piece of masking tape, then write the number with a marker. The terminal that connects to the leftmost pin as you look at the back of the phone jack is terminal 6. The terminal that connects to the second pin from the left is terminal 5, the terminal that connects to the third pin from the left is terminal 4, the terminal that connects to the fourth pin from the left is terminal 3 and the terminal that connects to the fifth pin on the left is terminal 2. The terminal that connects to the rightmost pin is terminal 1.
- 2). Strip the last 1/4-inch of insulation from each of the individual telephone wires with a wire stripper. Remove the screws from the terminals with a Phillips head screwdriver. Wrap the bare end of each wire around one of the terminal screws.
- 3). Fasten the screw with the white telephone wire to terminal 1 and tighten the screw with the screwdriver to hold the wire in place. Fasten the screw with the black wire to terminal 2, fasten the screw with the red wire to terminal 3, fasten the screw with the green wire to terminal 4, fasten the screw with the yellow wire to terminal 5 and fasten the screw with the blue wire to terminal 6.
- 4). Remove the pieces of masking tape that you used to label the terminals.
- 5). Place the phone jack over the hole in the wall so the holes in the jack align with the holes in the telephone outlet. Insert the screws that come with your telephone jack into the holes and fasten them into place with the screwdriver. Plug the telephone cord into the telephone jack.
