    • 1). Tie a leader to your fishing line. Leaders are important because muskies have sharp teeth that will cut a fishing line and are renowned for their ferocious fighting. Few freshwater fish have comparable fight. Tie a lure to the leader. Anglers commonly use jerkbaits for muskies. Jerkbaits mimic an injured fish by rising to the top of the water, quickly diving, rising again, and then diving. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and bucktails also work for muskies. You can use anything that appears to be a fish, grub or crawdad or freshwater shrimp.

    • 2). Fish the right holes, depending on what you want. Fish deeper water, if you want a big muskie. Fish closer to shore, if you are more concerned about catching a large number of muskies than catching a trophy muskie.

    • 3). Fish when muskies are most active. A muskie will begin hunting before dawn and remain active for a few hours after sunrise. From late morning through midday and into the afternoon, muskies are less active and considerably less aggressive. They become active again from late afternoon until dark. Although you can catch a muskie at any time of day, your odds are better when muskies are actively hunting.
