How to Make a Strike Indicator
- 1). Gather a 1/2 inch hank of yarn in a color such as olive green. Cut the yarn to a length of 9 inches with scissors.
- 2). Fold the 9-inch length of yarn in half and then in half again. Cut a 2-inch length of bright orange yarn with scissors. Hold the 2-inch length of yarn with the folded hank of yarn.
- 3). Slide a 5/16 inch O-ring onto the jaws of a pair of needle nose pliers. Push the O-ring 1 inch up the jaws.
- 4). Clamp the jaws of the vise on one end of the folded and 2-inch yarn lengths. Slide the O-ring down the jaws and onto the center of the yarn.
- 5). Remove the pliers and fold the ends of the yarn around the O-ring. Clamp the yarn in place around the O-ring with the jaws of the pliers.
- 6). Cut a 1/2 inch wide strip of surgical glove to a length of 1 inch. Insert the end of the surgical glove length through the O-ring. Hold the strip of surgical glove against the yarn.
- 7). Remove the pliers and hold the yarn and surgical glove strip in place with your thumb and finger. Wrap fly tying thread around the base of the yarn and surgical glove next to the O-ring. Make at least three wraps of thread and tie it off. Cut the thread free with scissors.
- 8). Turn the yarn so the folded ends are accessible. Cut 1/2 inch off the end of the yarn to remove the folded ends. Fluff out the strike indicator with your fingers.
