Forensics

Forensics is often defined as the application of scientific principles and other specialized knowledge to legal questions and issues. In the case of a computer forensic analyst, the specialized knowledge is about computer hardware and software. The legal questions often involve establishing liability by producing evidence that can be admitted in court, but forensic analysts also participate in private investigations. The process of producing legally admissible evidence also begins as a generalized inquiry into relevant issues. Forensic analysts may also themselves testify in court as expert witnesses.

Education

The educational background of computer forensics analysts varies widely. Some have backgrounds in law, criminal justice or law enforcement. All have at least some training in computer hardware and software. Thus, though the subjects are varied, most forensic analysts have at least a bachelor’s degree and many have advanced graduate degrees. At a minimum, an effective computer forensic analyst must be able to retrieve deleted files by producing forensic images of hard drives, penetrate password-protected systems and make sense of encrypted files.

Interpretation

A crucial part of a computer forensic analyst’s job is to interpret raw computer data into something intelligible. This can mean explaining how computer systems work, how searches of databases were conducted and how other evidence was uncovered. A computer forensic analyst will have to work closely with lawyers, law enforcement agents or private investigators to explain these processes so that computer evidence can be useful. A forensic analyst will also have to reliably preserve evidence until it is ready for presentation.

Earnings

The earnings of forensic analysts vary widely and depend on the employer. According to the BLS, private sector forensic analysts can earn more than $100,000 annually. A salary between $65,000 and $80,000 is more common, though, for those who do not own their own business. A government employee starts at something closer to $40,000 annually rising up to about $65,000.
