How to Cast a Spinner Cast
- 1). Attach a spinning lure to the end of the fishing line. Choose a lure size based on the size and species of fish, as well as personal preference. Use, for example, small 1/32-ounce lures for trout and larger 1-ounce lures for bass.
- 2). Hold the grip of the spinning rod with your dominant hand. Split your fingers around the foot of the reel with the index and middle finger forward and the ring and little finger back. Place your thumb on top of the reel grip.
- 3). Turn the handle of the spinning reel to rotate the bail and position the roller guide up near the rod. Reach forward with your index finger and hook the line in front of the roller guide. Pull the line up and hold it in place against the rod handle with your finger.
- 4). Open the bail with your opposite hand and allow line to release from the spool so that the spinning lure hangs 12 to 15 inches below the rod tip.
- 5). Stand so you are facing the target on the water and your feet are shoulder width apart. Slide the foot on your dominant side back slightly. Raise the rod tip up and back over your shoulder. Bend your elbow while keeping your wrist locked as much as possible.
- 6). Stop the back motion of the rod and allow the rod tip to extend further back to load the rod for casting.
- 7). Bring the rod forward toward the target on the water. Release the line as the rod tip approaches the target to allow the spinning lure to travel through the air to the target on the water.
- 8). Allow the plug or lure to contact the water and sink to the desired depth where fish are thought to be feeding. Close the bail on the reel with your hand and turn the the handle to retrieve the spinning lure.
