    • 1). Remove the battery at least every six months and clean the battery, battery bay and contacts. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and rub on the battery contacts. Rub the grime and dust off a battery and battery bay using an alcohol wipe.

    • 2). Remove the battery from the battery bay while the battery is not being utilized. Leaving the battery in the battery bay when the laptop is powered on but not using battery life still causes the battery to power on and heat up, which can decrease the life span of the battery.

    • 3). Recondition the battery if you notice a decrease in efficiency, or at least once every three months. Reconditioning the battery involves charging and draining the battery. Let your laptop use battery power until the battery dies, or completely discharges. Fully charge the battery for eight hours. Repeat the process two more times. Reconditioning the battery helps the battery utilize all of the battery cells. If the cells aren't routinely used, they can die or improperly work.

    • 4). Remove the battery from the laptop if you notice the laptop overheating or becoming warm. Overheating can damage the battery. The laptop battery should not be placed back into the laptop until both have cooled to room temperature. If the problem persists, check the cooling fans, or utilize a notebook cooler.
