What My Grandma Taught Me About Fish Oil

One of my fondest memories of my grandmother is playing cards with her.
We used to sit at the kitchen table for hours with two decks of cards laid out in a double solitaire formation and the cards flying.
It was so much fun, and we had some really good times.
However, as my grandmother got older, it got harder for her to play.
At first, she was just a little slower than she used to be -- and I thought I was finally catching up rather than that she was slowing down.
Eventually, though, it became obvious: she just plain could not see the cards anymore.
And glasses did not help because her eyes were deteriorating in such a way that she was actually outright losing her forward vision.
Of course, we were all very distressed -- and no one more so than my grandma.
However, she did some research and talked to a lot of doctors about her condition, age-related macular degeneration, both because she was hoping for a solution and because she was afraid that her children and grandchildrenmight end up with the same problems when we were her age.
While doctors were not able to correct my grandmother's vision, she did learn that many researchers suspect that taking omega 3 fatty acids each day could help prevent AMD and even slow the progression if a patient is already dealing with the problem.
Not surprisingly, she immediately purchased what seemed like lifetime supplies of salmon oil omega 3 supplements for my little sister and me and started asking us every time we spoke if we'd taken them that day.
I learned from my grandmother's AMD that you might not always know exactly how salmon oil is helping your body, but that you really cannot afford to deprive your body of the essential nutrients that it needs.
