Meyer Snowplow Troubleshooting
- If your Meyer snowplow will not operate at all, examine the winch. Disconnect the connector from the extension cable to the winch cable. Connect jumper cables to the snowplow battery while you use the opposite end of the jumper cables, and touch the positive cable to a contact on the winch. Touch the negative cable to the other contact. If the winch does not respond, switch the negative and positive cables on the winch. If the winch engages, then it is fine. If not, it will need to be serviced.
Check the alternator and battery to make sure they are working. Clean the wire connections that run from the battery to the winch. You could also have a frozen winch if water leaked into it. Leave the winch uncovered outside to let the water drain out. Then dry and clean the winch. - If the drum on the motor of your Meyer snowplow is rotating but the collar is not, then tighten all four nuts on the drum collar of the winch to keep it from slipping. If the drum does not rotate the winch, then the winch should be replaced.
- If the plow on your Meyer snowplow will not lift high enough, examine the direction of the winch to make sure the strap is wrapping over the front part of the drum. Also, examine the mounting harness. If the tubes are directed down, they limit how high the plow can lift. Use a jack to bend the tubes back to a straight position. Try to plow less forcefully and reinforce the mount to avoid the problem.
- If your Meyer snowplow hesitates before moving, it might have a worn switch. A poor contact on the battery connection might also cause this problem. Or the winch might have some gears that are worn out or broken, which means the winch will have to be replaced.
- If the plow on your Meyer snowplow just drops down a few inches, this is normal. There is no brake inside the winch to lock the plow. If the plow drops all the way to the ground, a faulty switch is to blame. Remember when you transport the snowplow to use the safety hook on the plow.
