How to Remove the Cargo Lights From a 1992 Ford Explorer
- 1). Lift and support your Explorer's hood.
- 2). Remove the negative cable on the battery with a socket wrench. Before you let the cable go, wrap the terminal at the end of it with black electrical tape. It may take eight to 10 wraps to completely cover the terminal but make sure that there isn't any metal showing when you're finished. The negative cable on your battery should be all black. If both cables are the same color, look for a (-) minus symbol on the battery to be sure that you're removing the correct cable.
- 3). Open the truck's door, sit down and reach up with both hands to remove the cargo light lens cover. If you look at the rear of the lens cover right at the top of it closest to the roof you should see two small rectangles. Each of the rectangles has a small tab on the inside of the lens that clicks into place on the cargo light assembly.
- 4). Push on the lens cover from the front--windshield side--toward the rear with one hand. While you're still pushing on the lens, use your fingers on the free hand to pull down on the lip of the lens at the rear. The lens cover should pop right off. If you have trouble using your fingers use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the lip of the lens downward while pushing on it from the other side.
- 5). Remove the light bulb at the center of the assembly, which is the cargo light. Grasp it between two fingers and pull it straight out of its metal retaining clips.
- 6). Put on a pair of latex gloves and install the new cargo light bulb just as you removed it.
- 7). Reinstall the cargo light lens cover. Mount the front--windshield side--first, then push up on the rear of the lens cover until you hear both of the tabs on the cover click into place.
- 8). Unwrap and discard the black electrical tape on the negative battery cable's terminal. Reconnect and secure the cable back in place on the battery, then check your repair.
