How to Peel Wood
- 1). Position the lumber on the work surface so the grain of the wood runs perpendicular to the flat ground.
- 2). Insert the knife or hatchet at the top of the lumber, or where you want to begin the peeling.
- 3). Press the knife into the wood based on the desired width of the peel.
- 4). Lever the end of knife or hatchet down to bring the blade slightly up.
- 5). Use one hand to clutch the end of the wood that is pressed upward. Gently lift the wood up.
- 6). Run the knife or hatchet along the grain of the wood in a downward motion while simultaneously gently lifting the piece of wood upwards.
- 7). Continue to peel the wood until you have reached the desired length of peel or the end of the wood.
- 8). Remove the peel from the wood. Repeat other peeling motions using steps one through seven, if desired.
