    • 1). Calculate the size of your sign. Measure the exact number of horizontal and vertical inches you need to create your sign.

    • 2). Purchase your oak wood. Take the correct measurements to your local home improvement store, where they can cut the oak wood piece to the appropriate size for your inexpensive sign.

    • 3). Sand the edges, front and back of the wood. Use a 120-grit sandpaper, and sand the entire area of the wood to create your sign.

    • 4). Prime your wood with a stain-killing primer. Paint the front, back and edges of your sign with a water-based primer.

    • 5). Paint your sign. To create your sign, paint your wood with two coats of acrylic paint.

    • 6). Open Microsoft Word on your computer. Type the words for your sign on a blank page in Microsoft Word. Highlight the text, choose an appropriate size and font, and print all desired words to create your inexpensive sign text.

    • 7). Cut around the words. Take the printed sheet of your desired text, and cut off the excess paper, to expose the word to make your sign. Cut your words out as close to the actual word text as possible.

    • 8). Lay Super Chacopaper, a type of design transfer paper, down on your wood. To make your sign, position the Microsoft Word printed text, face up, on top of the transfer paper.

    • 9). Follow the lines of the sign word with your needle-like marking tool or stylus. To create your sign, gently press along the printed text with the big tip end of your stylus until you complete the word.

Remove the Super Chacopaper and text paper. Carefully take the transfer paper and the word paper off the wood to create your sign.

Protect your sign with water-based polyurethane. Paint the wood with two to three coats for maximum protection.

Apply a picture hanger hook to the back of your sign and hang it in your chosen location.
