How to Cut an Opening for a Dishwasher

  • 1). Check the dimensions of the new dishwasher to see how large of a space you need to cut out in your kitchen. Check the width and height measurements especially.

  • 2). Plan to leave a few inches between the dishwasher and the wall if you're installing it in a corner. Leave several inches in the back to make the connections.

  • 3). Find the best space in your kitchen to install the dishwasher--next to the sink cabinet if possible. Look for cabinets that can be removed to make room for the dishwasher. A space with a narrow cabinet, for example, is not ideal.

  • 4). Remove the screws in the back of the cabinet you're removing. These screws anchor the cabinet to the wall. There also might be screws anchoring the cabinet to the countertop above.

  • 5). Cut out the cabinet. Some cabinets will slide right out, while others may need to be cut out with a hacksaw or power saw. Plan cuts carefully to make them as even as possible.

  • 6). Attempt to slide the dishwasher into place in the opening you cut out. Ensuring a proper fit is important before you start the dishwasher installation.
