Chain 2, then do 5 single crochet in the second chain from the hook. This is your first round.

Begin the second round by chaining 1, then do 2 single crochet in the first stitch, single crochet in the next 4 stitches and end with 2 single crochet in the last stitch. For round three, do 2 single crochet in each stitch all the way around. Use a safety pin to mark the beginning of each round, moving it as you complete each round.

Work fourth through sixth rounds by single crocheting in each stitch of the round. For round seven, do 2 single crochet in the first stitch and 1 single crochet in the next stitch. Alternate 2 single crochet in a stitch and 1 single crochet in a stitch to complete the seventh round.

Single crochet in each stitch around to complete eighth round. For the ninth round, do 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Continue the pattern of 2 single crochet in a stitch and 1 single crochet in each of the next two stitches.

Make the eighteenth through twentieth rounds by single crocheting in each stitch all the way around. Follow the pattern established for increasing until the hat reaches the right width. Try it on to be sure. Once you have the size you want, finish with 8 rounds of single crochet, 1 single crochet per stitch. Cut the yarn and weave in the end.

Brim

Turn hat inside out. Join a contrasting color of yarn where you ended the last stitch. Do 2 single crochet in the first stitch, then 1 single crochet in the next eight stitches. Continue the pattern of 2 single crochet in a stitch and 1 single crochet in each of the next eight stitches to complete the round.

Make seven more rounds of single crochet, 1 single crochet per stitch, working in back loops only. At the end of the eighth row, cut the yarn and weave in the end.

Turn the brim up. Make a pompom and sew it on the tip to complete your crochet hat.
