Anime Art Lessons
- Anime bodies resemble typical human bodies when it comes to proportion, but anime characters are typically slimmer. Their torso is shorter and their legs are longer. Their neck is thinner and their head is wider. Learn to draw anime characters by drawing traditional human proportions. These characters have a body that is about the height of seven heads. The head and torso takes up slightly less than half the body's total height. Use real, live people for reference when practicing your drawings. After drawing several people, exaggerate them into anime characters. Draw an anime character next to the human figure by elongating their legs and widening their head.
- Draw a realistic human head in the shape of an oval. Exaggerate the head into an anime character by shortening the chin and giving it a strong point. Block out the head by drawing a line down the center, horizontally and vertically. Draw the eyes so the top of the eyes meet the line that crosses the horizontal center. These eyes should be much larger than traditional human eyes. Draw a small moon-shaped mouth halfway between the chin and the eyes. Draw a nose halfway between the mouth and the eyes. Add a unique, anime-inspired hairstyle.
- Anime eyes vary in shape from more to less realistic. However, these eyes are always large. Start your anime eye by drawing a human eye. Exaggerate the eye into an anime eye by drawing it downwards, so that it's taller, not wider. Alter the shape of the eye as desired. Use strong, clear shapes such as ovals, circles, diamonds and half-moons. Add eyelashes to the corners of the eye and draw thick eyebrows.
- Add unique style and flair to your anime art by giving your characters a unique style. If your characters wear school uniforms, set them apart by giving them wild hair, different colors and lengths of socks and tights, showy jewelry or badges. If your characters are not students, give them fun outfits that express their personality. These clothing items can be exaggerated and unrealistic. Make your characters extra unique by giving them silly hairstyles such as crazy updos, large buns or extremely long bands.
- Many anime characters look very similar. Talented artists help viewers differentiate between characters by giving each character a unique color template. Never give two characters the same hair and eye color combination. If you run out of realistic hair colors, use unnatural colors such as purple or blue.
