    • 1). Choose the colors of paint you are to use. Light colors expand the room and make it seem less confining, especially light blues, greens and beiges. If your heart is set on a darker color, also select a second paint color that is a couple of shades lighter.

    • 2). Pour the paint into a painting tray and use rollers to spread the color evenly over the walls. Make sure to apply as many coats as is necessary to ensure the color is thick and bold, letting the paint dry in between coats. The bright paint color will cause a reflective illusion that makes the room look expanded.

    • 3). Use a square-headed paintbrush to paint the second, lighter color over the trim of the walls if you originially chose a dark paint color. The light trim will make the walls themselves seem further away, making the room appear larger.
