    • 1). Attach the 4600C3 to a baitcasting rod, which is the kind of rod that has a trigger beneath the reel seat.

    • 2). Spool line onto the rod and reel. The reel can hold up to 170 yards of 10-pound test line, which is a good choice for people starting out with the reel. Beginning with the rod tip, thread the line through each of the rod guides. Thread the line through the gold line guide at the front of the reel, then wrap the line twice around the spool. Tie a knot so the line is tight on the reel, then turn the reel handle clockwise to wind line onto the reel. Stop when the line is 1/4-inch below the rim of the spool.

    • 3). Cut the line beyond the end of the rod, then tie on a lure that is 1/4-ounce or heavier.

    • 4). Set the drag by turning the star-shaped metal piece on the inside of the handle clockwise. When you can turn it no more, loosen it slightly by turning it counterclockwise. Continue loosening it until it takes a steady tug on the line for the spool to release line.

    • 5). Locate the button on the side of the reel with the handle. Press the button down, which allows the spool to turn, and place your thumb on the spool to stop it from turning.

    • 6). Hold the reel and rod in your casting hand, and hold the butt of the rod with your other hand.

    • 7). Bring the rod and reel over your casting shoulder so it forms about a 45-degree angle with your back, then bring it forward over the same shoulder to cast.

    • 8). Release your thumb from the spool as the rod and reel travel past your casting shoulder. Keep your thumb off the spool until the lure is about to land. Just before it hits the water, press down on the spool with your thumb.

    • 9). Reel in your lure by turning the handle of the reel clockwise.
