How to Replace the Drive Belt on a 1998 Dodge Neon
- 1). Locate the negative terminal on the battery. It is marked with a minus sign embossed in the battery case next to the terminal. Remove the negative battery cable from the terminal using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt, and then remove the cable end. Isolate the cable from the battery for safety while you are working around the pulleys.
- 2). Locate the adjuster bolt on the power steering pump bracket. The bolt is on the upper outside edge of the bracket. Loosen the bolt with a wrench and move the power steering pump toward the engine to loosen the belt.
- 3). Remove the old belt from the pulleys and discard it. Locate the adjusting bolt on the top of the alternator. Loosen the bolt on the alternator with a wrench and push the alternator in toward the engine. Remove the belt from the alternator and crankshaft pulleys.
- 4). Install a new belt onto the inner groove of the crankshaft pulley then wrap it around the alternator pulley. Pull the alternator out away from the engine to tighten the belt. Tighten the adjusting bolt with a wrench to hold the alternator in place.
- 5). Install a new belt onto the outer groove on the crankshaft pulley, the power steering pump pulley and the air-conditioning compressor pulley. Pull the power steering pump out away from the engine to tighten the belt, then tighten the adjusting nut with a wrench.
- 6). Install the negative battery cable onto the negative battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the engine and verify that the belts are running true over the pulleys.
