How to Increase Music Sales in Hip Hop

I hear tons of people saying that the artists are responsible for their record sales and the fact that these sales have stalled.
I disagree.
After working with artists for years, I believe it is a combination of market conditions and slow retail sales of CD's.
People are not really buying CDs anymore because of iTunes.
Also, most labels are NOT putting money into artists promotions and marketing budget anymore due to economies of scale.
There are two channels to market to in order to reach consumers: the individual consumer who will purchase the music and the retail chains and indie record stores.
You must market and promote to each of these channels every week.
If you do not, sales will definitely stall out.
You must have the money to market and run promos inside of retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.
You then must have the money to reach the consumer via ads on TV, radio, and print.
Labels don't have it.
Therefore, everyone suffers.
It is going to be up to the artist to take their own career in their hands and market and promote their records themselves.
The days are gone where you will receive a recording contract that works.
This is now like hitting the lottery.
I heard my friends on Twitter say that Drake magically got an incredible $2.
3 million recording contract.
But this is not always what it seems.
I found out from my 18 year old cousin Ronnisha, that Drake was on some show on Nickelodeon for 9 years.
9 years? Can you imagine being in front of a world wide audience for 9 years and NOT having a fan base? The reason Drake got the deal from his management team was because he had provable numbers and a provable audience of fans that knew who he was.
At least the kids knew exactly who he was.
Will Drake be able to make his numbers and make the record label profitable? Probably so because of his audience.
Right now, others like Omarion and Bow Wow are struggling to get record sales.
Maino's Hustle Hard album dropped and only received some 20,000 plus record sales.
The industry has plummeted because people are not working and have less disposable income.
This lack of disposable income will impact record sales for years to come.
The one person who did not suffer yet he had a huge personal sacrifice is T.
I.
out of Atlanta.
He went to jail and usually, when you go to jail or die, your record sales increase exponentially.
