The Internet Marketing Statistic - Bad for Your Wealth?

103 12
What is the IMS? Well it's that infamous quote that tells us how 99% of people that attend workshops or purchase a course in order to start an on-line business never make any money.
Quite where the statistic comes from I have absolutely no idea, but let's just assume for one minute that it's true.
So, you are one of a hundred people who have purchased a credible business system and are told that you only have a 1 in 100 chance of being successful, rather demoralising right? Absolutely, but let's take a closer look and get things into a proper perspective and see what happens to the remaining 99 people.
To start with there are naive folk out there who actually believe that the perfect wealth creation opportunity actually exists and comes in the shape of a 'system' that can be set up in a few hours thereafter will miraculously deposit vast sums of money into their bank account on autopilot whilst they sleep (or are sunning themselves in exotic climes).
Of course this is complete rubbish, such a system does not, cannot and never will exist.
The problem is that people get sucked in by clever copy which present opportunities as being exceptionally simple, akin to the above description-promising massive profits for very little work.
As such out of the initial 100 people who purchase a system/course etc..
...
50% switch off once they discover that they will actually have to make an effort, take action and do some work.
Consequently they do nothing with the program but continue to spend time and money in their eternal search for the non-existent, mega bucks for no work plan.
If this is you then you have three choices:
  1. Give up and stick with your regular job,
  2. Carry on spending money and wasting time searching for something that you'll never find or,
  3. Accept the fact that you may well have built a successful business by now (and spent less money in the process) if only you had taken action earlier and this time you are going to get your head out of the sand and make a start with a proven plan.
The simple fact is, looking for this elusive non-existent scheme takes time and costs money so doesn't it makes total sense to spend that time and money doing something productive? The good news is that if this isn't you, your chances of failure have just been cut in half, from 1 in 100 to 1 in 50-isn't that brilliant news? Let's look at those remaining 50, all fired up, enthusiastic and raring to go, determined to make a start as soon as they get home from the workshop/seminar or finish reading the course.
Out of these remaining 50, 20 of them can't start right away, they've got to create an office/workspace or do some other task before they can get down to business.
They devise a plan; they're going to spend one week doing whatever it is that needs to be done, once completed they're going to get started; this is an example of how it goes...
On Monday they come home from work with the intention of sorting out the spare room which they plan to decorate over the course of the week before installing a desk, computer, filing cabinet etc and turning it into an office.
Only once home from work, having eaten their evening meal then get distracted-just got to watch the news, pick the kids up, walk the dog etc.
But time flies and before they know it, it's too late to start today, but they're definitely going to do it tomorrow.
Only the following night they get in late or there's yet another distraction so it's put off again.
Then Wednesday is swimming/pool/quiz/football/knitting circle/book club night and simply can't be missed.
By then there seems little point in starting during the week so they put it off until the week end, only for whatever reason it doesn't happen then either, so the procrastination continues.
A few weeks pass the enthusiasm dwindles, they forget what they got fired up about in the first place, by another course and the cycle begins again.
Are you in this group? If not, your chances of success have just been reduced from 1 in 50 to 1 in 30.
The remaining 30 all manage to sit down, boot up their computer and get on- line.
15 of them do nothing more than open e-mails you know the ones- stuff with tempting headlines that simply have to check out.
By the time they've done this, followed a link, watched a video, read a load of copy, hours have passed and they are still no further forward with their business and may well have spent more money on something someone has successfully convinced them that their business is doomed without.
If you actually get on-line and take action directly relevant to your business rather than open and follow up e-mails your chances of failure will have dropped from 1 in 30 to 1 in 15.
What happens to those final 15? Ten of them will never get anywhere due to lack of discipline and the inability to organise and prioritise.
They begin a task, get distracted and go off on a tangent.
They'll buy another system that they've been convinced they need or try a different approach, get information overload so don't know whether their coming or going or what to do next, they've created a mountain for themselves and can't face the climb.
In fact these people may never give up, they just keep going round and round in circles, spending money on different things but get absolutely nowhere.
So, we're now down to the last 5.
The final 5 people who have:
  • Realised that the "wealth for no work plan" does not and never will exist
  • Decided to follow a proven business plan
  • Set an achievable, realistic initial target
  • Sat down, booted up their computer and got on-line
  • Ignored or deleted seductive looking but nevertheless worthless e-mails
  • Taken action to follow the steps of a proven business plan in a disciplined and organised manner ensuring that they prioritise tasks and do not get distracted
Okay so, if only one person actually becomes successful, what happens to the remaining 4? The simple and sad fact is that they give up, maybe they hit a few snags, perhaps their first project fails or perhaps they have several ideas that they want to put into practice, so instead of starting one project and finishing it before moving on to the next, they start on one project have another idea, move on to that and never get anything finished (I did this for months).
They soon find it's like spinning plates on poles, running around trying to keep all these different things moving simultaneously, as a consequence none of them work properly so they get despondent and pack up.
The answer is to keep going, stick to the plan and finish the project before moving on to the next -this will turn you in to that 1 out of 100! IMS Accurate Interpretation? Okay, so my personal interpretation of the IMS may not be entirely accurate as there's no way of knowing what happens to every individual who attends a workshop, buys a course etc but it'll give you a pretty good idea of why the majority of people never get anywhere and now you know what the pitfalls are you can take the steps necessary to avoid them.
