Packing for College Tip: Prepare Before You Pack

Today I will discuss the importance of preparing before you pack. I completely understand that everyone wants to just get moving over with as quickly and easily as possible. So, people naturally think that this means just buy the number of boxes and packing supplies you think you will use and then cram everything into your boxes. While this may sound good at first thought, you may run into some serious issues while moving and make moving more difficult than it has to be. Let's take a look at how I recommend you prepare for packing.

First, make a list of all of the items that you will be packing. Run through your list and determine what kind of supplies you are going to need. For the smaller, but heavier items, it is better to use a small or medium moving box. For the bigger, but lighter items, use a large box (don't put too much weight in these boxes-it will be near to impossible to handle!). If you have fragile items that require more support, I recommend bubble wrap as the general all around protection. On top of all of this, you will need tape to seal up all of your moving boxes. Don't get too complicated with your supplies. Moving boxes normally come in three or 4 sizes for a reason- because that's all you need! Plus, using these boxes will make packing your car or trailer a much easier process.

After you have decided what kind of supplies you need for each item, then decide which items you will pack together. Pack all items that will be in the same location together. This way you won't waste more energy carrying your boxes from room to room. The only time you should not do this is if you are packing for college and you are going to live in a dorm room. Now, determine which items you can pack together in the same box. Most quality moving boxes can hold up to 65 pounds, so pack accordingly. However, you really do not want to fill a large box up with 65 pounds. Keep these boxes to a maximum of 35 pounds as a rule of thumb. Your fragile items will generally be smaller. Pack these lightly together. You want to allow more space for these items for the bubble wrap.

Now that you have decided where all of your items are going, go and buy your moving supplies! These tips can easily save you hours of headaches. Remember, decide what size of items would be best for each item, decide which items you will pack together, and go out and buy your supplies accordingly!
