Light Bites in Spain - What to Eat When You Miss Lunch in Spain

106 4
Spain is king of the food titbits - in no other country on earth can you try so many different dishes in a single mealtime. Everyone knows what tapas is, but there are other names that you might want to try when looking for a bite to eat. These items below are your best bet of food if you miss the main meal times of 2pm (for lunch) and 9-10pm (for dinner).
  • Merienda The Spanish equivalent to afternoon tea. Coffee or hot chocolate with a pastry. In Valencia they have Horchata

  • .
  • Sandwich Invariably ham and cheese, often toasted. Spanish sliced bread (ominously called pan de molde - bread from the mold and not, thankfully, 'moldy bread') is awful - synthetic (even more than usual) and often ever so slightly sweet). Best avoided. Certainly avoid the fast food chain 'Rodilla' (oddly enough, this means 'knee'), which serves horrible sandwiches that you will seriously regret ordering.
  • Bocadillo A bread roll will filling, a la Subway. Spain has Subways as well as Pans & Company, a cheaper alternative based in Barcelona but both of these are a little expensive - most normal cafeterias will do you a simple bocadillo with ham, cheese or chorizo.
  • Tosta Like tapas but served on a small slice of toast or bread.
  • Montadito A small bocadillo. There is a chain of restaurants called '100 Montaditos' which serves 100 combinations of about 20 toppings, all at a reasonable 1? each.
