Capture Your Voice in a Recording Studio

101 3
There are many fine recording studios in Sydney, Australia. Competing with the finest of London and New York, several pride themselves for their clientele of international fame.

Indeed, Lady Gaga, Midnight Oil, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, to name a few, have all chosen to record their musical talents in Sydney. "Old" rockers, new pop stars, and renowned rappers have travelled "down under" to cut demos and plan their latest masterpiece.

Recording studios range from ultimate sophistication to indie ventures. Some of the best known ones offer the latest equipment and the most professional engineers. As full service facilities, they offer a wide range of services including recording, mixing, and digitization. Others also provide video editing, filmed interviews, photography, and even live tape sessions.

They offer a large choice of the best microphones (directional, handheld, clip-on, boom, etc.), playback systems, a dizzying array of plug-ins, outboard gear, and monitoring equipment. An expansive list of instruments such as grand pianos, drums, guitars is also available.

Their facilities are designed for the best quality in sound, as well as for the comfort of their clients. Some recording studios in Sydney even have lodging available near their professional facilities. All employ highly qualified technicians.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a number of smaller studios available. Some might be housed in converted bedrooms or warehouses. Others will actually bring the studio to you, carrying their portable gear. Smaller companies may lack large and fancy real estate but might provide a more personal service.

Choosing among the 90+ companies is no small task. A careful review of past customers is necessary. Besides the amenities and the expertise of the staff, one should also consider the type recording they usually do. A studio specializing in rock music would not be appropriate to record a podcast or a talk show.

Cost is definitively a factor, especially for new artists or someone on a tight budget. A package deal might be more advantageous, particularly if you need a variety of services and the use of an array of equipment. Diligent planning and evaluation of what you will need, and for how long, to obtain the best results is important. Be clear on what you need and on the results you wish to achieve. If you just want a simple, brief, and modest recording, a basic studio will probably suffice. If, however, you intend to produce a sophisticated or complex album that requires recording, mixing, mastering and more, then a multi-day package would end up more advantageous. You should make several enquiries, as prices are not necessarily correlated to size. A brief survey showed that, on occasion, the smaller facilities charge more per hour or day. It is also important to compare the same services: a one track mixing is a lot cheaper than a four track mixing and mastering affair.

There is much to do before hiring a studio, and this choice could be the turning point in your road to fame.
