How to Make a Fishing Light
- 1). Punch a hole in a handle of a clear or opaque plastic container. If the handle already has a hole through it, then there is no need to do this. (Do not punch a hole through the body of the container, just the handle. You can use a hammer and nail or a drill.) Tie fishing line to the box through the hole. Wind the excess around something such as a small piece of pipe or even a plastic drinking bottle, so that you can lower the light to various depths in the water. Use at least 30 feet of line in case you are fishing in a deep lake. The size of the container won't affect how the light works--however, remember that you will have to lift the container out of the water, so smaller is better. One that is just big enough to fit a small-to-medium-size flashlight is fine, and shouldn't cost more than $5.
- 2). Close the plastic container tight and immerse it in water to test it for a watertight seal. Look for bubbles as a sign that the container has a leak. Remove the box and dry it off.
- 3). Put sand or pebbles in the plastic container to weigh it down so that it will sink in the water.
- 4). Put a flashlight in a plastic bag so that the sand won't damage it. Use a flashlight with a light-emitting diode, if possible, since LEDs don't usually get as hot as conventional lightbulbs. Turn it on and put it in the box.
- 5). Close the lid and lower the light into the water.
