How to Replace the Fresh Water Drain Valve
- 1). Turn of the gas supply to the hot water heater or water tank.
- 2). Turn off or close the valve for the cold water supply. Turn the valve counterclockwise to turn it off.
- 3). Connect a garden hose to the drain valve, at the bottom of the tank. Open the valve to drain the tank.
- 4). Wait for all of the water to drain out of the tank. Disconnect the garden hose.
- 5). Remove the old drain valve with an adjustable wrench. Place the wrench on the back of the valve and turn it counterclockwise. Continue turning the wrench counterclockwise and then pull off the valve.
- 6). Apply plumbers tape to the threads on the new drain valve.
- 7). Insert the new drain valve into the hot water tank and tighten it with the adjustable wrench. Turn the wrench clockwise to tighten the valve.
- 8). Open the valve for the cold water supply to begin filling the tank with water.
