How to Blow Foam Insulation Into an Attic
- 1). Clear the attic of any items that may block you from applying the insulation.
- 2). Staple vent chutes over the eaves. This allows proper ventilation to occur and prevents the buildup of moisture, which can promote the growth of mold.
- 3). Make a mark that's clearly visible from a distance on several pieces of scrap wood to indicate the desired depth of the insulation. Nail the wood to the ceiling joists in different areas of the attic to provide a guideline for how much insulation is in a given area.
- 4). Load the blower with the insulation, following the manufacturer's instruction for the model you are using.
- 5). Begin installing the insulation. Start at the far end of the wall and work toward the center. Keep the hose parallel to the floor, and fill the space between three to four joists at a time, backing away as you fill them. Do not pack the insulation in too tightly, or it will become less effective. When you finish one side of the attic, insulate the other side, using the same method. Add insulation until you reach the marks on the scrap wood.
