Batten Installation for a Metal Roof
- 1). Climb a ladder to the top of the roof and run a tape measure across both the length and width of the roof. Multiply the two measurements together to get the total square footage of the roof. Divide by eight, which is the square footage of a batten panel, to get the number of panels needed for installation.
- 2). Inspect the sheathing or plywood on top of the roof. Verify that there are no nails sticking up and hammer down any that are so they are flush with the surface. Check that there are no gaps between the sheet, and that they are firmly secure to the joists underneath.
- 3). Roll out felt underlayment, beginning at any corner of the roof. Start the first row flush with the bottom of the roof and secure it to the roof with staples and a staple gun. Insert a staple every 8 inches along the felt, and cut the felt off when you reach the end of the roof with a utility knife.
- 4). Overlap the second row of felt by 4 inches over the first to it can seal properly. Install the second row and all of the remaining rows in the same manner until the entire roof is covered in roofing felt.
- 5). Lay the first batten roofing panel down, beginning at the bottom corner of the roof. Secure it in place with 1 1/2-inch fastening clips. Snap the clips on every 18 inches around the entire panel. Overlap the second panel by one ridge and install it in the same manner. Continue around the roof until it is covered entirely with the panels.
