How to Remove Fixed Wooden Shutters
- 1). Set your ladder on a flat and stable surface, at a height where you can safely reach the tops of the first shutters to be removed. Block the ladder feet if necessary. If you're not using a ladder, remove any objects like ornamental fixtures from under the window, just in case you drop the shutters.
- 2). Check the side of the shutter that's closest to the window to determine whether the shutter is mounted on the window jamb or the window casing itself. In either case, most modern fixed shutters have a block that's used in between the shutter and the wall surface. Peek behind the shutter to find this block, using a flashlight as needed.
- 3). Locate the holding screws that hold the shutter in place on the block. These screws are generally recessed into the frame of the shutter to "hide" them from view. Use a power screwdriver to remove each screw. Pull the loosened shutter away. After you have removed the shutter, locate the screws on the wooden block to prepare for removal of the block.
- 4). Unscrew and remove the block if you're planning to install functioning shutters. They don't require the use of blocks. Move all the removed materials away from your work area.
- 5). Move your ladder to the opposite side of the window and repeat the process to remove that shutter from the window.
- 6). Repeat for each pair of shutters on the home you want removed. If you'll be installing functional shutters, you may be able to reuse the pre-drilled holes that held the block in place. If you can't, you may want to fill each hole with wood putty or mason's mortar.
