Instructions on How to Replace a Penn Reel Drag
- 1). Take out the spool of the Penn reel by unscrewing its drag control and using your fingers to lift it from the reel. Pry the ring away from the reel groove using a screwdriver.
- 2). Remove the handle of the Penn reel, and unscrew the six screws that are securing the frame's side plate. Use your screwdriver to remove the screws.
- 3). Take apart the rest of the Penn reel to expose its gears and drag. You will find four screws behind its star drag that secures the reel's bridge assembly to its side plate. Unscrew the assembly from the side plate while keeping some pressure on the bridge.
- 4). Locate the old Penn reel drag inside the bridge assembly and take out its washers. Lay the washers on a flat surface and in the order you removed them to make sure that you remember how to replace them.
- 5). Take apart the eccentric spring of the reel, as well as its lever with your fingers and apply some reel lubricant prior to reassembling it.
- 6). Replace it with your new set of washers, using the order from the ones that you took out in earlier steps and reassemble the Penn reel by reversing the order of disassembly.
