How to Install the Camshaft on a 1993 Toyota Tercel
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench. Open the valve on the bottom of the radiator and drain the engine coolant into the drain pan. Remove the radiator using a wrench to loosen the bolts. Remove the air cleaner using a wrench to loosen the nuts.
- 2). Turn the adjusting bolt on the alternator using a wrench to relieve the tension from the drive belt. Remove the belt from the engine. Remove the other drive belts as well by relieving the tension on them. Remove the valve cover using a socket and ratchet. Label and remove the vacuum lines.
- 3). Rotate the crankshaft clockwise using a wrench until the No. 1 piston is at top dead center of the compression stroke. You can verify this by lining the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the mark on the engine block. Remove the timing belt covers using a socket and ratchet.
- 4). Remove the timing belt guide using a socket and ratchet. Make match marks on the timing belt and pulleys noting the position of each for reassembly. Mark the belt noting the direction. Loosen the timing belt idler pulley using a wrench. Remove the timing belt from the Toyota. Remove the pulley bolt and return spring from the engine.
- 5). Label the spark plug wires at the distributor cap and remove them. Remove the distributor cap by unclipping it and pulling it straight up. Mark the rotor button position and its relation to the distributor. Mark the position of the distributor in relation to the engine block. Remove the distributor from the engine using a wrench to loosen the bolts.
- 6). Disconnect the hoses from the fuel pump and plug them. Remove the fuel pump from the car using a socket and ratchet. Remove the distributor gear bolt using a wrench. Place a wrench at the end of the camshaft to keep it from turning and then loosen the sprocket bolt using a ratchet and socket. Remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
- 7). Remove the bearing cap bolts using a socket and ratchet. Label each bearing cap as you remove so that they go back together the same way. Remove the camshaft and oil seal. Place a new camshaft and oil seal on the engine. Coat the camshaft with oil. Place the bearing caps on the engine in their proper locations.
- 8). Install the bearing cap bolts starting from the center caps and then the outer caps. Do not tighten the bolts all at one time. Tighten the front bolt a little, then the back bolt and so forth. Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt with a socket and ratchet. Hold the other end of the shaft with a wrench while you tighten the bolt.
- 9). Install the distributor gear and tighten the bolt with a wrench. Install the fuel pump and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump and tighten the clamps with the screwdriver. Install the distributor and line up the match marks. Tighten the bolts with a wrench. Install the rotor button and line up the marks.

Install the distributor cap and clip it into place. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap according to the labeling. Install the timing belt. Install the timing belt idler pulley and return spring. Tighten the idler pulley bolt with a wrench. Be sure to line the markings up that were made when removing it. - 11
Install the timing belt covers and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Connect the vacuum lines to the proper location according to the labels. Install the valve cover and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Install the drive belts according to the belt diagram on the inside of the engine hood. Tighten the adjusting bolt on the alternator. - 12
Install the air cleaner and tighten the nuts with a wrench. Install the radiator and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Refill the radiator and reservoir with engine coolant.
